The Small Publishers Association’s (SPAN’s) online community is made possible by its members: Sponsors, Advertisers, SPANpro Members, and content contributors each support the development of meaningful educational content that is completely open and available to the entire independent publishing industry. Through this unique networking benefit SPAN is able to pursue its overall mission - thank you!
Here are a few examples of recent, insightful, posts from the community that will help you start, or build your publishing platform:
Possible Pain in the SEO
SPAN's Bradley Flora continues to analyze Google's New +1 Ranking System and its impact on independent publishers. Bradley's new article can be found in this discussion thread: The Power and Pain of Google's Personalized Search.
However, if you haven't had a chance to read his first article, I recommend that you start here: SEO for Independent Publishers.
Bookstore Demise
Designer and experienced small publisher, Dave Bricker, who started and moderates the SPANnet Group, Self-Publishing Straight Talk, shared this Blog post entitled: A World Without Borders - The End of the Bookstore.
While I believe that for most independent publishers, there are better places to sell books then the bookstore, in the comment section of Dave's insightful Blog, I argue that the book seller's industry is changing to compete (per the American Book Seller Association), which might provide potential opportunities for creative small publishers.
Indy Pub Success
I am always excited to read about an independent publishing success story, and publishing industry veteran, Wolf Hoelscher (who is also the creator of a terrific new service called Pubmission), tells of a great one!
Here is his entertaining and educational Blog post titled: "Machine of Death" Adds Life to Publishing Model.
In this interview with David Malki ! (David explains the !), Wolf provides insight into the power (and labor) of social media marketing, and an online marketing technique some call a "Book Buy Bomb" (Mr. Malki ! called it a "nuclear option"! - this last exclamation point is my punctuation).
