Recently the Wylie Agency, a large New York literary agency, announced the creation of Odyssey Editions. The Odyssey Editions imprint will feature Wylie's authors' e-books and distribute exclusively through Amazon.

The Authors Guild likes the fact that this deal will give authors higher royalties and dislikes that the deal is exclusive with Amazon.

The big publishers believe the e-book revenue should belong to them. Bookstores see this as one more step toward Amazon taking over the industry.

Here are several articles and web pages on the issue.

The appeal of Amazon has been hyped over and over by proponents, and none of the opponents appear to get any notice. I propose that most booksellers and ebook sellers prefer to use Amazon as a platform because of that appeal and not because of its real effectiveness as a book retailer. I think it has become important that publishers decide which fence they are on. I am tempted to confine all my sales to just my site and Amazon, and the other retailers must prove to me why they are better at selling the books because of the appearance of Amazon as the only place to go for books for the consumer. I would prefer to make my books available to everyone in whatever manner I can, but I am spread thin enough as it is. When I see some real meaningful sales then I will try to distribute globally, but I am having a hard enough time just selling in the domestic marketplace.
