SPANnet - Self Publishing Information

It seems that a small publshing company such as mine are at a great disadvantage in acquiring services such as repesentation in special areas of the market place.  The two areas I'm interested in  are getting large print representation - I'll have to do that myself, and establishing a relationship with a company that will represent my title (s) in foreign distribution with out have to take them on as a domestic distributor.

What I need help with is finding  someone that will distribute my book (I have a second book coming out by the end of the year) in Europe and Israel and still allow me to make some money.

Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but more questions. Should you be looking for a foreign distributor, or should you be looking at selling the rights to foreign publishers? Or is selling the rights to foreign publishers more for books that need to be translated? I'm curious myself.
I think selling the foreign right involves translations. I'm still learning about this myself. I suspect that getting foreign distribution is the best way to control the content and sale - at the moment. Even though the author is a known playwrite. I don't thing anyone will offer much for the rights. Then their is the play itself. It is a seperate issue altogether.

Right now I have the kind of US representation I want, for the moment. Unless someone show me how I, as a very small publisher can make money under the current archaic system we have in this country, I'll stay out of the brick and morter store for the most part.
What countries are you looking at? Are you in Canada? UK? Other english speaking countries? If so, translation is less important--though some edits may be required due to slang, etc.
I currently have no foreign distribution. I'd like to be in Canada, UK, Australia and other Eurpoean countries that have an interest in Holocaust studies, such as Holland Belgium, Poland, of course Germany, and I'm interested in getting into Israel. The play itself had it's premier in Israel, in English, this past April.
I don't want this to turn into a commercial for my organization, the U.S. Department of Commerce, but our offices throughout the world do help companies locate agents and distributors. Check our our website at www.buyusa.gov/publishing

A local specialist can visit with your company. Where is your company located?
I'm located in East Stroudsburg PA, but I can meet with someone in NYC anytime. And, you can be as commercial as you want! Where are you located. I'll be in Washington Saturday thru Monday. If you haven't gone to my website, you should be helpful.

Steve,

Forgive my geographical ignorance. Our offices are in Pittsburgh and Philly. A specialist can come to your offices and discuss what we can do to help. Typically, the way it works is a local office (say Philly), contacts a U.S. Department of Commerce office overseas. Our overseas offices are located in American Embassies and Consulates. There, we have specialists by industry who search for partners on your behalf and/or answer questions about what's happening in that country (i.e. translation, IPR, taxes, logistics, distribution, etc)
I work out of my house. So I'm flexable about a meeting place. I'm located about 90 miles from NYC and about the same from Philly. Iwill go to the email you sent earlier at the end of next week.
NYC would be better for you then. Dawn Bruno heads up our publishing team. She's located there.
I will be in Washington for the ALA conference until late Monday. ButI will go to the website mid to late next week.
Good afternoon Keith. I will be in NYC on 7/20 and 7/21 and would like to makle an appointment with Dawn. Can youu have her call me at
917 612 8857 to arrange a time and place.

Thanks
Steve, Dawn will be traveling then. I'm not sure when she's back. How about our Philly office?
