One of SPAN’s terrific Sponsors, Color House Graphics, alerted me to this important development for Children’s Book Producers.
As reported by Publishers Weekly in this article by Karen Raugust, Children's Books Finally Receive Exemption from CPSIA Testing Requi..., both the House and Senate exempt “ordinary” ( ink-on-paper books and other printed materials ) children’s books from the law’s testing provisions amended the Consumer Product Improvement Act (CPSIA).
Gary Jones, assistant v-p for environmental, health and safety affairs at the Printing Industries of America was quoted in the article saying: “It’s awesome news. We still have to comply with the lead limits and the tracking labels, but not the most onerous part, which is the testing and subsequently the certification requirements. While the legislation does not specifically exclude us from certification, if we don’t have to test, we should not have to certify.”
Please read the article for further information, and if you have questions regarding this or any other publishing business regulation, I encourage you to ask the experts who Sponsor the Small Publishers Association – like Phil Knight of Color House Graphics.
Thanks for the heads up, Phil!
