SPANnet - Self Publishing Information

Hi all,

I'm in the process of launching a children's publishing company with two new Pre K series. I'm going to apply to Baker & Taylor for wholesale distribution, however when reading over their requirements they state that any products intended for children 12 or under must be in compliance with the Consumer Product  Safety Improvement Act of 2008. And that I am to provide "all information" about our children's products which is required to be disclosed by the CPSIA.

Can anyone clarify any of this? How do i comply with CPSC and what info does the CPSIA require?

Thanks so much!!

Larry, all this, I believe, is about lead and phthalates during printing process.  Your printers should know about that.  My printer, when the distribution company asked me to provide the proof that my book was in complaince with CPSIA requirements, sent me some tests' results that they were doing for some big publishing company and told me that all the children's books they printws were "ordinary" books (or something like that) and that "ordinary" books are not required to have a compliance with CPSIA.  I hope that this information will help you.

Best wishes,

Inna

Here's a link to an article that has some information.

"Certificate of compliance" requirements have been stayed until Dec. 31, 2011, but it is all very confusing. So far, my printer has not provided any information, and according to the law, the publisher (not the printer) is responsible for compliance. Most “ordinary” children’s books (those made of process inks on paper or board) do not need to be tested, but books that incorporate novelty items, PMS inks, laminates, foils, wire, saddle-stitching (staples), non-animal-based adhesives and other components, do. I definitely would like to find out more about the requirements. I hope more replies are added here.

Monica,

Wow! Thanks so much!! excellent info!

Hi Everyone - As print brokers we have been printing children's book for many years.  Since these requirements came out we've been having our printers (overseas) provide us with the an overall phthalate and lead certification for their papers and inks.  We do not do individual book testing unless the client specifically asks for one.   An additional requirement is that the books for children under age 12 need to have information in the book that allows the book to be traced back to their original manufacturer.  What we put in our books is

CPSIA Tracking and Lableing Information

 - Importer - Coburn Printing Ink

 - City in China were manufactureed

 - Date of Production

 - Coburn Printing reference or job #

As the importer we also have to file a 10+2 with our customs broker which we keep as records to our files.  This document includes the actual plant name and address where the product was manufacturered.

We've had our books sold in  Barnes and Nobel, distributed through Random House and other stores and distributors.  Our process has been accepted by all of them to date. If you have additional information you can contact me directly at... Coburn Printing Ink  707-544-8382 - Kirin Coburn.  Hope that helps.

Kirin,

That is extremely helpful. Thanks!
