I wanted to share this information with anyone who might be interested.  It's an opportunity to display your book at a trade show.  Deadline is September 30, 2011.

 Hi Sherry, Laura and Keith,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the insightful information!

I converted my children's book to Kindle. The issues I encountered were that the pictures were in black and white and the text did not line up with the illustrations as they did in the hard copy of my book. I do not know if the same problems would be encountered on the colored version of Nook. I haven't tried it yet.

Hi Keith and Robert,

You are correct in the statement, "it's not either/or." In this current market multiple delivery avenues are essential. I took interest with Robert's statement on graphics issues... it could indeed be a bad file. A good printer would never let that project ship!  My experience with Color House Graphics, a book printer--not a publisher, whether done by  traditional pre-press means or done using automated pre-flight, an issue like Robert stated likely would have been caught.

If writers are looking to self-publish, finding a reliable printer with both automated services (to control costs for those who do not need file help) as well as knowledgeable support staff (for those needing file assistance) is a must.  Do not be afraid to interview a prospective printer!

Best wishes, Robert... please post a link to your book when you are finished! Laura

Hi Robert,

It's not an "either/or" world out there between eBooks and bound books. They both have their place.  Some readers will always prefer printed books and some young new readers will get great pleasure out of eBooks. In a few years, people will feel the same way about holding an eReader in their hands, turning the pages, activating characters and sounds, viewing embedded videos of an author speaking to the child... There's no limit.  For children's books dependent on illustrations with matching text and/or text that shouldn't flow freely, be sure to set your PDF settings accurately.   We haven't had any graphics issues with our Red Chair Press Nook books, Apple iBooks, etc.     Good luck!   Keith

Hi Laura,

As of 2010 when we released our book, I heard of graphic's issues, specifically pixilation. However, there is a company in Arizona, called StoryChimes that is creating wonderful versions of children’s books. We were hoping to get picked up by them, but at this point they have too many Christmas books in the pipeline.

I agree about the "old school" way of reading! To me there is nothing better than holding a book in your hands and turning the pages, especially with a children's book. However, we have had so many people say they would be more apt to spending a few bucks on a download version as opposed to a paying for a hardcover edition.

Thanks for the comment!

 Robert

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the response! More in general terms, as this is an area I know little about. I'm concerned about compatibility between platforms, such as Kindle, Apple etc. I've heard rumors that to publish an e-book requires conversion specifically to those readers and this could get rather expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert,

When you say "convert to e-book format", are you think .epub specifically, or were you speaking with more general terms?

What kinds of "graphic issues?" If it's truly a children's book, don't you want the fun of turning the pages with them? I know they will be (if they are not already) very tech savy... but there is something to be said for the "old school" way of reading a book to a child...

Hello all,

We are considering converting our book to e-book format. I have heard various things about children's books and graphic issues. I'd love to hear back from those that have children's e-books with advice, etc..

Thanks!!
