Hello Everyone,
Membership in the Authors Guild and the American Watercolor Society have criteria based on experience and quality. In a way, these exclusive memberships are similar to my vision of certification for publishers.
I'm looking for other examples of certification in the visual arts, publishing, music, and similar industries to help us understand and design the PIP Certification.
The best place to post your information is as a comment to this discussion thread. If you can, please provide links.
Thanks,
Scott

I'm a member of Romance Writers of America. One of the largest writing organizations with over 8,000 member. I spoke to the RWA National office and was told that I would not be recognized as a published author no matter how much money I make because my work would be self-published. Only books that are traditionally published where the author receives an advance or a combination of advance and royalties meeting the minimum amount specified for one book to be included in RWA's PAN-Published Author Network.
I write paranormal romance: historical, contemporary, futuristic, fantasy, urban fantasy. All of the other major writing organizations appear to have similar requirements. Despite the organization I pay dues to won't recognize my efforts, I'm forging ahead with my publishing business.
I wish you all the best on this project. If I can be of assistance, please let me know.

Tambra,
Thanks for sharing this, it helps to illustrate the fact that there still is a stigma against self-publishers that may be seen, unnecessarily, as an albatross that the publishing industry is working desperately to keep off from around its neck.
I also appreciate you sharing this because it gives us another angle of pursuit. If the PIP program could meet standards that the RWA would recognize then we could further accomplish our goals of legitimizing those independent and self publishers who have overcome the stigma of self publishing.
The creation of this program has proceeded slowly because we want it to happen only one way: the right way.
We are taking care to not rush because if implemented correctly PIP certification has so much potential to change the paradigm that publishers of quality independent titles still deal with today.
Stay tuned, as the next round of input for the PIP program is just about ready for the public and industry. When that happens, the hub of all the activity we still be here in this group's discussion forum: Publisher Certification - PIP.
Thanks for your time. It is much appreciated.
Sincerely,
