Table of contents —includes the title and beginning page number of each chapter of the book. Sometimes includes descriptive material for each chapter.

Table of illustrations —a list noting illustrations used in the text and their page numbers.

Tailpiece —a small ornament at the end of a chapter.

Tear sheets —newspaper or magazine reviews, ads, or stories cut from the periodicals they appeared in.

Telecommunications —electronic communication between one computer and another using a telephone and a modem.

Terms —the number of days a customer is allowed before paying, as in “net 30.”

Text —the main body of type, minus front matter, back matter and heads.

Thesaurus —a book or electronic program that lists or stores synonyms and antonyms.

TIFF (or TIF) File— Tagged Image File Format. Used for graphics and supported by virtually all paint, image-editing, and page layout software applications.

Tipping in —the insertion of additional material, such as foldout maps, by pasting, into a bound book.

Title —any one of the books a publisher currently has in print. Also, the name of a particular book.

Title page —an early recto page that usually gives the title, author(s) or editor(s), publisher, and place of publication.

Trade paperback —the larger paperback (5" x 8" to 7" x 10" inches). Used to be called a “quality paperback.”

Trade publisher —a conventional publishing house, publishing books for a mass audience, which typically pays authors advances and royalties, as opposed to a self-publisher or a subsidy publisher.

Transpose —to accidentally reverse the order, such as of two letters.

Trim size —the finished size of a book after the signatures have been trimmed and folded. Page measurements standard to a particular kind of book (for example, 5½" x 8½", 6" x 9", and 8½" x 11") are called “standard trim size.”

Two-up —pieces printed side by side.

Typeface —the style of the letter or character of the type, what it looks like.
