Publishing Glossary

Illustrations —visual material such as photographs, drawings, graphs, and tables.

Image area —the printable area of a page where an image has been, or will be, produced.

Imposition —the positioning of pages for large press sheets so that when cutting and folding is complete, the images will be in the correct sequence.

Imprint —the identifying name of a publishing company.

In print —books that are currently available from publishers.

Index —an A to Z list giving the location of specific material in a book. Part of the back matter.

India ink —dense, black ink preferred for drawing artwork.

In-house —those functions performed within a publishing company rather than by outside contractors. Also, the term used to indicate that the finished books have been delivered to the publisher.

Insert —additional material added to a manuscript by an author or editor.

Insertion order —a form advertising agencies use to place advertising in various media.

Inventory —books on hand available for sale.

Invoice —a bill sent with a book order.

ISBN —International Standard Book Number. An essential identifying number used for ordering and cataloging purposes.

ISP —Internet Service Provider. A company that facilitates access to the Internet, usually at a cost to the consumer, although there are still some free community networks.

Italics —type with a right-hand slant like this. Often used for quotations, titles, and special emphasis.
