Half title —a page on which the title stands alone. Precedes the complete title page. Also known as “bastard title.”

Halftone —a photograph or illustration that has been “converted” into a pattern of tiny dots so it can be printed.

Hardcover —a book bound in boards. Also called case-bound or hardback.

Headband —a piece of material affixed to a book’s spine for reinforcement.

Headline —a large bold caption appearing at the top of an advertisement or article.

Heads —short for chapter titles.

Hickey —a speck or blotch in a photographic negative.

Home page —the main Web page.

Hot stamping —applying foil to paper using heat and pressure.

House organ —periodical or newsletter issued by a firm or organization for its members, employees, customers, or prospects.

HTML —HyperText Markup Language. Often referred to as HTML. The coding language used to create documents for use on the World Wide Web.

Hyperbole —Exaggerated claims intended to sell a product or promote a person. Also known as “hype.”
