F.O.B. —free on board. Meaning the publisher must pay shipping cost to the destination.
Facing page —any page forming a double spread with another.
Fair use —the allowable and legal use of a limited amount of copyrighted material without getting permission.
FAQs —frequently asked questions. Documents that list and answer the most common questions on a particular subject or problem area. A frequently used term on the Internet.
Film lamination— a glossy coating for book covers that protects against scuffing, adds strength, and keeps paperback covers from curling.
First edition —the entire original run of copies of a work from the same plates.
First serial rights —the right to serialize a forthcoming work prior to the publication date. Often sold to only one magazine or one newspaper. An author may sell or retain rights to reproduce or publish a work in any form, in whole or in part. Second serial rights permit magazine excerpts after the publication date.
Flap copy —the material describing a book and its author that appears on the inside folds of the dust jacket.
Flat fee —a onetime payment for a job or task, such as the preparation of text or artwork.
Flyer —an inexpensive promotional piece often printed on an 8½" x 11" sheet of paper.
Flop —to flip a photo negative over so it will be printed facing the opposite way.
Flush —meaning to be even with. Usually refers to the left margin, as in “flush left.”
Foil —hot stamping material normally found on the front cover of a book. Can be gold, silver, or standard colors, such as red, blue, green, etc.
Folio —a page number of a book.
Font —complete set of type, including letters, numbers, and punctuation marks, in one typeface.
Font, display —a typeface that is better used for captions, headlines, chapter headings, and the like.
Font, sans-serif —an unornamented font such as Helvetica or Optima. Any type style that does not have cross-strokes or curlicues on the ends of the letters.
Font, text —a typeface that is well suited for the body text of a book. Generally not a sans-serif face.
Forecasting —using mathematical computations to predict business trends.
Foreign rights —subsidiary rights allowing a work to be published in other countries and/or translated into other languages.
Foreword —introductory remarks about a book and its author. Often written by an expert (other than the author) to give a book greater promotability and authority. Part of a book’s front matter.
Format —designation of typeface, margins, boxing, or any other special treatment of copy. Also used to indicate the trim size and physical layout of the book.
Formatting —the process of designing a publication.
Forum —another name for a newsgroup or chat.
Freelancers —skilled creative people (writers, editors, graphic artists, consultants, etc.) who sell their services as independent contractors.
Front matter —all pages before the main text.
Frontispiece —an illustration preceding and facing the title page. Also called a “front plate.” Part of a book’s front matter.
FTC —Federal Trade Commission. A governmental regulatory agency.
FTP —File Transfer Protocol. A standard method of sending files between computers over the Internet.
Fulfillment —the filling and shipping of book orders. |
